Fung’s Commitment to McCarthy Would Pave the Way for the Return of Donald Trump

PRESS RELEASE >>

WARWICK, RI- As the investigation into the January 6th attack on the Capitol continues with the select committee moving to subpoena former President Trump, Allan Fung remains committed to using his first vote in Congress to make Kevin McCarthy Speaker of the House.  McCarthy was in contact with Trump leading up to the attack on the capital, voted against certifying election results,  later walked back condemning Trump for inciting the insurrection, and refused to participate in the House select committee investigating the January 6 attack on the US Capitol.

In a Boston Globe interview last week, Fung refused to answer if he would support proposed legislation reforming the Electoral Count Act, legislation introduced in the Senate in July and which would make it more difficult to subvert presidential elections. The bill passed the House on Wednesday with only nine Republicans supporting the bill– all of which are retiring or lost their primaries to right-wing challengers. Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy voted against the bill.

“I am running for Congress because I want my son to grow up in a democracy where his vote counts and a President is elected by the will of the people– not the will of Donald Trump.  Allan Fung’s first vote would be to empower Trump-loyalist Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House, who we now know allowed the attacks on the Capitol to happen and then denied the results of the election. I stand with the majority of Rhode Islanders who reject these extremists,” said General Treasurer and congressional candidate Seth Magaziner.

Additionally, Allan Fung has acknowledged voting for Trump in both 2016 and 2020 and has never voiced regrets or acknowledged any possible connection between the former president and the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. [Providence Journal, 10/2/22]
