WARWICK, RI- Today, Magaziner for Congress announced the release of its television advertisement “First,” which profiles Rhode Islanders who depend on Social Security and are standing up against Republican Allan Fung for supporting extremist Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, who is determined to cut the program.
An estimated 230,000 Rhode Islanders currently receive Social Security benefits and for many seniors, it is their only source of income.
“Social Security and Medicare are the bedrock of the middle class and Republicans in Washington are determined to cut and privatize it,” said General Treasurer and congressional candidate Seth Magaziner. “In Congress, I will strengthen Social Security and Medicare so that Rhode Islanders can keep up with the cost of living.”
Allan Fung has repeatedly committed his first vote in Congress to making Kevin McCarthy the Speaker of the House. Kevin McCarthy co-authored a book with Paul Ryan that called for the end of guaranteed Medicare and for the privatization of Social Security. Under McCarthy’s leadership the Republican budget proposal, Blueprint to Save America, released in June by the Republican Study Committee calls for significantly reducing the size of America’s social safety net and raising the age requirement to receive full Social Security benefits.
“Rhode Island seniors are making tough choices between paying for groceries or gas, but Allan Fung has pledged his loyalty to Kevin McCarthy who is determined to cut Social Security and Medicare,” said Communications Director Patricia Socarras. “It’s no surprise that as a former insurance company lobbyist, Fung is standing with Kevin McCarthy against lowering the cost of prescription drugs. Fung is out of step with Rhode Island seniors who are struggling to pay for their life-saving medications.”
Yesterday, Allan Fung campaigned with former New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie, who also proposed cutting Social Security.
In stark contrast, Seth Magaziner last week accepted the endorsement of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare and is a strong advocate of expanding the program to help seniors meet the rising cost of living.
